Expansive Lighting Gaffer flaunting a Unique 30 year Career
With over 30 years of diverse experience in the lighting industry, I bring a wealth of knowledge and creativity to every project. My journey has led me through working with countless talented DOPs across a variety of genres, including TV, movies, and commercials. This broad exposure has not only honed my technical skills but also given me a deep insight into industry trends and styles.
I pride myself on my ability to adapt to any lighting scenario – from intimate interior settings to grand exterior environments, in both day and night contexts. My career has been a pursuit of creative freedom through technical excellence, developing a mastery of lighting mechanics in conjunction with image composition and creative design techniques. Put alongside a constantly expanding knowledge of cameras, lens, and their ever-growing capabilities, it all comes together to form a competent and reliable technical package that is a strong asset for any production.
Starting with a classical training in television production and lighting design at the Royal Conservatoire in Glasgow, Scotland, formerly the RSAMD, my career took a leap from theatre lighting to major international gigs, working with icons such as Metallica and U2. I was at the forefront of the transition to DMX technology, experiencing firsthand the evolution of stage lighting and control systems.
My versatility started off handling theatrical, rock & roll, corporate, environmental, and even architectural lighting, until settling down and specialising in film & television for the last two decades. I’ve worked on a wide range of projects, from commercials featuring stars like David Beckham to award-winning TV shows like the BBC’s 2022 Christmas Special, Mayflies as well as large budget features, with actors like Morgan Freeman, Brian Cox and Jonnie Lee Miller. Every project, big or small, contributes to my deep well of expertise.
I’m always eager to take on new challenges, stative or dynamic, bringing my arsenal of lighting knowledge to the next project. My aim? To find the best lighting solution for each individual scene or location, and then align those solutions into a coherent package across the project, to deliver the highest standard of service, expediting the optimal efficiency to effect ratio.
